MIDTOWN – An unoccupied building that collapsed overnight has been contained at ground level.
The warehouse at 3rd and 4th Avenue, which reportedly commenced buckling from the top floor, working its way downward, was under control within a few seconds when all available materials involved in the collapse reached their lowest possible extent.
“The public faces no danger from this point down,” said structural engineer Warren Potter. “Pretty much everything that could come down, did. And we’re reasonably confident that it can’t fall any farther.”
Early indications from investigations suggest that the collapse stemmed from the removal of numerous structural columns by an event planner who wanted to hold a roller skating party in the empty space.
